Overview
Vietnam is a long, narrow country located in Southeast Asia, bordering China to the north, Laos and Cambodia to the west, and the South China Sea to the east. Shaped like the letter "S", the country stretches over 1,600 km from north to south.
The two major river systems are the Red River (in the north) and the Mekong River (in the south), both vital to agriculture and rural life.
In the 19th century, Vietnam was colonized by the French, becoming part of French Indochina.
Nationalist movements grew in the early 20th century, with leaders like Ho Chi Minh advocating independence.
After World War II, the First Indochina War (1946–1954) ended French rule with the Geneva Accords, dividing Vietnam into North Vietnam (communist) and South Vietnam (non-communist).
