Overview
Leh–Ladakh, often called the “Land of High Passes,” is a high-altitude desert region in northern India, nestled between the Karakoram and Himalayan mountain ranges. Known for its stark landscapes, snow-capped peaks, ancient monasteries, and vibrant Tibetan-Buddhist culture, Ladakh is one of India’s most unique and breathtaking destinations.
Leh is the largest town and serves as the administrative capital of the Union Territory of Ladakh, which was carved out of Jammu & Kashmir in 2019.
It is divided into two main districts:
Leh – Known for tourism, monasteries, and the Indus Valley
Kargil – Historically significant, especially during the 1999 India–Pakistan conflict
Most areas lie above 3,000 meters (9,800 ft), with some of the world’s highest motorable roads, including Khardung La and Chang La.
Once a part of the Silk Route, Ladakh was a trade center connecting India, Tibet, and Central Asia.
Influenced heavily by Tibetan Buddhism, Ladakh shares cultural similarities with Tibet and was part of the western Tibetan kingdom.
