The Andaman Islands are a pristine archipelago located in the Bay of Bengal, forming part of the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands of India.
The Andaman Islands consist of around 300 islands, stretching over 700 km from north to south. These islands lie closer to Myanmar and Thailand than to mainland India and are separated from the Nicobar Islands to the south by the Ten Degree Channel.
The Andamans have a layered history:
Ancient Inhabitants: Indigenous tribes such as the Great Andamanese, Onges, Sentinelese, and Jarwas have lived here for thousands of years. The Sentinelese remain completely isolated and hostile to outsiders, protected under Indian law.
Colonial Era: The British established a penal colony in Port Blair in the 19th century. The infamous Cellular Jail, also known as Kala Pani, was used to exile Indian freedom fighters during British rule.
World War II: The islands were briefly occupied by the Japanese from 1942 to 1945. Subhas Chandra Bose also visited during this period and hoisted the Indian flag in Port Blair.
Post-Independence: After 1947, the islands were integrated into the Indian Union and eventually became a Union Territory along with Nicobar.
